What is inland marine insurance coverage?

We are asked this question often.  Inland marine insurance is usually a "line" of coverage added on to a policy or sometimes purchased as a stand-alone policy.  Generally speaking, it covers goods in transit or projects under construction.  Although it’s generally a type of property insurance, some classes within inland marine only provide liability coverage.  It is derived from marine insurance, which covers items, whether in transit or not, while on water.  Once it gets to land, that coverage ends and inland marine picks up from there.

Typically, the following types of businesses require some form of inland marine insurance coverage:
Ambulance Equipment
Amusement Rides
ATM Machines
Band Uniforms
Catering Equipment
Mobile Concession Stands
DJ Equipment
Exhibition Property
Go Karts
Golf Carts
Janitorial Equipment
Laundry Equipment
Medical Equipment
Mortician’s Equipment
Musical Instruments
Photography Equipment
Pool Cleaning Equipment
Radio or TV Studio Equipment
Recording Studio Equipment
Rock Climbing Wall
Scientific Instruments
Sports Equipment
Theater Property
Vending – Candy/Snacks
Vending – Stamps
Vending – Videos
Videographer Equipment

As you can see above, all of these businesses are moving on a regular basis.

Boardwalk Insurance Group has invested heavily in the use of cutting-edge technologies to make life easier not only for our employees, but also for our valuable clients.  From the growing number threats by malicious hackers in the news almost daily, we felt it was necessary to do our part to assure that our website is safe, protecting company and client information.

Therefore, we have introduced the use of a SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate in wild card form on our website.  According to GoDaddy.com, an SSL certificate is “a digital certificate that authenticates the identity of a website and encrypts information sent to the server using SSL technology. Encryption is the process of scrambling data into an undecipherable format that can only be returned to a readable format with the proper decryption key.  A certificate serves as an electronic "passport" that establishes an online entity’s credentials when doing business on the Web. When an Internet user attempts to send confidential information to a Web server, the user’s browser accesses the server’s digital certificate and establishes a secure connection.”

Since our website uses multiple sub-domains for our various locations and features, we could not use a regular SSL certificate.  We had to go with the “wild card” option which allows an unlimited number of sub-domains to be included within the SSL certificate.  This assures that our entire website is secure, not just our main pages.

We want our customers to have trust in that our website is secure and that their information will be transmitted and managed responsibly and heavily encrypted in the event that it falls into the wrong hands.

Insurance agents handle very private information on their clients.  It’s imperative that they take measures to keep this information secure.  Whether you are a client of our independent insurance agency or not, make sure your agent utilizes an SSL certificate on their website and has other measures in place to secure your personal information in their agency management system, office filing cabinets, etc.

Never fill out a form on a website that is not secure.  Contact information is okay, but if you have to provide personal information, such as you do to obtain an insurance quote, be sure to find out if the website is secure.  How can you tell if a website is secure? The first option is to look at the address bar where the URL is.  If it’s different color than what is usually is, then that means they are using some security measures.  The other way is to look for a little padlock icon somewhere in your browser window (usually towards the bottom right of your screen).

Also, most “secure” websites utilize 1024-bit encryption.  In 2011, this encryption is not enough.  2048-bit encryption is the way to go now and provides the highest level of security available today.  If you are looking to add an SSL certificate to your site, the vendor you use matters.  Make sure they are a member of the “Certificate Authority Browser Forum,” an organization which upholds to the most strict standards.

We purchased our SSL certificate from the fine people at GoDaddy.com.  They listened to our concerns and suggested the options that would work best for us, while also saving us money as opposed to some of their competitors.

Are you looking for cheap apartment renters insurance?  Many apartment complexes require tenants to carry apartment renters insurance these days and won’t let you move in until proof of this coverage is provided by your insurance agent or insurance agency.

The good news is that this insurance is relatively inexpensive.  Most insurance companies who provide this coverage price it between $50 and $150 per year.  The variation in cost is based on the liability limit selected and the amount of contents coverage the customer wants.

The liability coverage protects you when claims come in from third parties.  These include guests who come to visit you.  The contents coverage, also referred to as personal property, covers your furniture and fixtures inside your apartment.

Some apartment complexes do not require tenants to maintain this coverage and others only require this coverage if, for example, you intend to put up a satellite dish.  We get a lot of questions as to what a satellite dish has to do with apartment renters insurance.  The answer is that if the dish was improperly installed and happens to fall off the building and land on someone or something, the apartment complex owners could get sued.  If the tenant carried an apartment renters insurance policy, then the tenant’s insurance company would defend the claim and the property owners would be off the hook.

The amount of liability coverage can vary from as little as $25,000 up to $1,000,000.  The contents coverage generally starts at $10,000 and goes up to $50,000.

A general renter’s policy is also available for those who rent homes and mobile homes from landlords.  The limits of coverage and rates are similar to apartment renter’s insurance policies.

If you are live in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington or Wisconsin, and are looking to purchase a cheap apartment renters insurance policy, contact Boardwalk Insurance Group to get a free, no obligation quote.  We have several carriers to choose from so we can find the right coverage and price for you.

You can go to our website and fill out our online application and just let the quotes come to you.
